Program

Johannes Brahms: Double Concerto in A minor Op.102

I. Allegro (A minor)

  • The "Argument": It starts with a massive orchestral blast, followed immediately by a rugged, solo cello cadenza. The violin then enters with its own fiery response. It feels like a tense conversation or a debate between two strong personalities.

II. Andante (D major)

  • The "Hymn": This is the heart of the piece. The two soloists play together in beautiful, wide-spaced octaves. It’s incredibly lyrical and calm, representing the "peace treaty" or reconciliation between the two friends.

III. Vivace non troppo (A minor → A major)

  • The "Dance": A playful, rhythmic rondo with a distinct Hungarian "gypsy" flavor (a nod to Joachim’s heritage). It ends on a triumphant, bright A major chord, signaling that all conflict has been resolved.

Johannes Brahms: String Sextet in B flat Major Op.18

I. Allegro ma non troppo:

  • A songful movement in sonata form, opening with a famous, expansive theme for the first cello.

II. Andante, ma moderato:

  • A dramatic set of variations in D minor based on an "old-world" theme.

III. Scherzo. Allegro molto:

  • A brief, energetic movement with a rustically dancing Trio section.

IV. Rondo. Poco allegretto e grazioso:

  • A graceful finale that brings back the mellow, sunny mood of the beginning.
