Opera & Operetta

Opera & Operetta

Experience an elegant journey through opera, operetta and art song with soprano Ella Gehrmann and German-Thai tenor Nathan Fischer, who also performs at the piano. This richly varied program brings together passionate arias, lyrical duets and intimate songs by some of Europe’s most celebrated composers.

The first half explores the drama and romance of the operatic stage, from Verdi’s Rigoletto and La Traviata to Puccini’s La bohème and Tosca, alongside works from Mozart’s Idomeneo and Smetana’s The Bartered Bride. Audiences will encounter tender lyricism, theatrical intensity and some of opera’s most memorable melodies, culminating in the sparkling drinking song Libiamo.

After the intermission, the concert turns inward with selected songs from Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe, a landmark of German Romantic song that journeys through love, longing, pride and heartbreak. The atmosphere then brightens with beloved operetta favourites, including Vilja-Lied, Dein ist mein ganzes Herz and Heia in den Bergen.

The musical journey concludes by crossing cultures, with Dan Caslar’s Cittá silente and the inspirational Thai song Kwam Fan An Sungsut (ความฝันอันสูงสุด) by King Rama IX. Performed by Ella Gehrmann, soprano, and Nathan Fischer, tenor and piano, this intimate concert promises an afternoon of expressive voices, timeless melodies and memorable musical storytelling.
